Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP John Jordan on Closure of Algonquin College Perth Campus

January 15, 2025

Responding to last week’s announcement regarding the pending closure of the Algonquin
College Perth Campus, Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP John Jordan acknowledged the
difficulties resulting from declining enrollment at the local campus, compounded by
unprecedented financial challenges across the sector.

MPP Jordan is, however, optimistic about the opportunities for continued learning at the Perth
Campus site.

“I’ve been in discussions with Algonquin President and CEO Claude Brule, Nolan Quinn, Minister
of Colleges and Universities, and Lisa Thompson, Minister for Rural Affairs – all of whom are
aware of the campuses’ excellent reputation and innovative programming,” said MPP Jordan. “I
will continue to explore all avenues of discussion regarding the potential for increasing
enrolment in a historically unique, but geographically challenging location.”

Since taking office in 2022, MPP Jordan has hosted Ministers from various portfolios to
showcase the campuses’ standard of excellence and innovative programming, including a
recent tour of the Heritage Carpentry and Joinery state of the art facility with the Minister of
Culture and Heritage.

“There are important opportunities for niche-based learning that could take advantage of the
tools and skill sets already in place. I am optimistic that if we continue to work together to focus
on meeting the unique needs of a specialized market, we can find a sustainable path forward
despite the current setbacks.”

Specific details of the Perth Campus closure are still to be announced, but if projected losses
are unmitigated, programs will remain active until the 2026 Spring Term at which time courses
will be transferred to the Algonquin Ottawa campus.
