North Lanark Historical Society Celebrates Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant

Appleton, Ont. – In August 2021, the North Lanark Historical Society (NLHS) received a $27,000 Community Building Fund – Operating stream grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The funding allowed the Society to continue normal operations of the North Lanark Regional Museum (NLRM) throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One of the resounding impacts of our collective experience during COVID 19 was the realization that we are all part of a larger story,” said John Jordan, MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston. “The funding allotted through the Trillium Foundation Grant was a lifeline for this small but mighty museum, as a whole new generation reached out for the stories of our past to bring perspective to the future. Our thanks to the Museum Staff who funnelled a well-deserved grant into an opportunity for all of us to stay connected at a time when we needed it most!”

The OTF funding was used to fund the salary cost of one full-time employee for a year. This staff member oversees the day-to-day operations of the NLRM. The grant has also allowed staff to develop new and unique digital content that aims to engage with new audiences that cannot easily visit the physical site. Additionally, staff have developed volunteer opportunities that can be done virtually and explored new technologies that can be incorporated to ease the transition from in-person to digital content.

The North Lanark Regional Museum tells the stories of the North Lanark Region through the collection, preservation and presentation of artifacts, culture and local history. We encourage the public to experience their unique heritage through inspiring museum programs, special events, and a readily accessible local history and genealogical collection.
