Ontario Investing in John Howard Society of Kingston and District
Community Service Order Program to connect individuals to community service work in Kingston and surrounding communities
October 2, 2024
The Ontario government is investing $372,575.20 over three years in John Howard Society of Kingston and District through the 2024-25 Community Service Order (CSO) Program. This program connects individuals with organizations in Ontario that provide opportunities for people to complete court-mandated community service work.
“This funding is important to expanding a wide range of resources and services that’ll provide people the opportunities they need to have a successful future,” said John Jordan, MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston.
The intent of the CSO program is to deliver people-centred, innovative and inclusive programming to reduce the likelihood of reoffending and increase client self-awareness. The program also includes wrap-around support like training, skills development, job placement at non-profit agencies, and referrals to short-term counselling.
“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is proud to fund community-led and innovative programs to help individuals on parole or probation build a brighter future,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “Through CSO, there’s an opportunity for people to make positive changes and develop the skills they need to succeed.”
Over the next three years, the Ontario government is investing over $4 million to assist 11 community-based organizations that support those on probation and parole.
“We are honored to have been awarded the Community Service Order (CSO) contract, which will allow us to further support individuals in making meaningful contributions to society utilizing a restorative justice approach. This program not only helps to reduce recidivism but also strengthens the community by fostering accountability and providing volunteer opportunities for personal growth,” said Julie Langan, Executive Director of the John Howard Society of Kingston and District. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with our community partners and the Parole and Probation Offices of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, Hastings, and Northumberland Counties to ensure the success of this important alternative sentence program.”
