As part of its plan to protect Ontario, the province is investing $520,558 to support transportation services in Lanark County. This funding through the 2025-26 Gas Tax program can be used for local public transit initiatives such as expanding service hours, increasing routes, purchasing new vehicles and improving accessibility to increase transit ridership.
“The people of Lanark County and Smiths Falls deserve access to reliable transportation services that get them where they need to go quickly and safely,” said John Jordan, MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston. “The funding we’re announcing today is good news for people in our rural communities, as Lanark Transportation improves access to healthcare, supports independence, reduces isolation and enhances overall quality of life. Our government will continue to protect Ontario by making historic investments in public transportation.”
The province is investing nearly $380 million through the 2025-26 Gas Tax program to support public transit in 107 municipalities, helping protect Ontario communities by strengthening transit services across the province. In addition to the Gas Tax program, Ontario also supports municipal transportation projects through the Connecting Links, and Ontario Transit Investment Fund programs.
“Lanark County and Smiths Falls are truly fortunate to benefit from a municipally funded specialized transit service, the Lanark Transportation Association,” said Kurt Greaves, CAO for the County of Lanark. “This remarkable non-profit, born out of local grassroots efforts, plays a pivotal role in connecting residents to essential appointments that enhance their quality of life across the County. Thanks to consistent annual backing from the Provincial Government, the service has steadily expanded its ridership, offering invaluable support and greater accessibility to members of our community.”
Nearby municipalities that also received funding through the 2025-26 Gas Tax program include Kingston, which received $3,218,066 and Ottawa, which received $33,061,834.
“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is investing nearly $70 billion in public transit to protect Ontario by building a stronger, more resilient, self-reliant economy,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation. “Today, we’re ensuring municipalities can continue to deliver safe and reliable transit services for their communities.”
